Grizzly vs Jet Dust Collector

For a garage shop, the closest head to head match between the two brands is the Grizzly G0548ZP against the Jet DC-1100VX-CK. Both are single-stage canister collectors with a 6 inch inlet. The Grizzly has the bigger motor (2 HP against 1.5 HP) and a finer 1 micron filter, but it runs on 240V only. The Jet ships wired for 115V, carries a 5 year warranty against Grizzly's 1 year, and costs a little less on this site.

If you already have a 240V outlet and want the most motor for the money, I lean Grizzly. If you only have 115V, or you care about a long warranty and a dealer network, I lean Jet. The specs below come from Grizzly's G0548ZP manual, Jet's published spec listing, and each company's warranty terms. For each brand on its own, read my Grizzly dust collector review and my Jet dust collector review.

Motor and airflow

CFM is cubic feet of air per minute, the volume a collector moves. Grizzly lists 1,700 CFM for the G0548ZP. Jet lists 1,100 CFM for the DC-1100VX-CK and ties that number to a 4 inch connection. The two companies don't describe their test setups the same way, so the gap on paper may be larger or smaller than the gap at your saw.

What the hardware tells you is clearer. The Grizzly pairs a 2 HP motor with a 12-3/4 inch cast aluminum impeller. The Jet pairs a 1.5 HP motor with an 11 inch steel impeller. An impeller is the fan wheel that pulls the air. A bigger wheel on a bigger motor moves more air at the same speed, so the Grizzly should keep more airflow on a longer hose or a short duct run.

Static pressure is the resistance air meets in hose, duct, and filters, measured in inches of water column (in. w.c.). Grizzly lists a 10 in. w.c. maximum and Jet lists 10.5 in. w.c. Those are close enough that I would not choose on that line. If you run one tool at a time on a short hose, both have enough. If you plan ductwork to several machines, the 2 HP motor gives you more room. My comparison of 1 HP vs 2 HP dust collectors covers where that line falls, and the CFM calculator will size it for your tools.

Power: the deciding factor for many garages

Grizzly's manual lists the G0548ZP as 240V single-phase only. It draws 9 amps, needs a dedicated 15 amp 240V circuit, and comes with a NEMA 6-15 plug. It cannot be rewired for 120V.

Jet lists the DC-1100VX-CK as a dual voltage machine, prewired for 115V at 11 amps, with the option to run at 230V and 5.5 amps. That means you can plug it in the day it arrives, then move it to 230V later if you add a circuit.

If your garage has no 240V outlet, add the cost of an electrician to the Grizzly's price before you compare. My 240V dust collector wiring guide explains the job, and my Grizzly G0548ZP setup guide covers the plug and circuit details from the manual.

Filters and the Vortex Cone

A micron is one millionth of a meter. A lower micron rating means the filter stops smaller particles. The Grizzly's canister is rated at 1 micron and the Jet's at 2 micron. Both are pleated canisters, which pack much more filter area into the same space than a cloth bag. My guide to canister vs bag filters explains why that matters for the fine dust that stays in the air.

Both canisters have a cleaning handle on top. On the Grizzly, the handle moves paddles through the pleats, and the manual says to use only the handle or a soft brush on the inside, and never compressed air or liquids. Jet's manual covers mounting its handle to the canister. Follow each maker's own cleaning instructions, since the filter media differs.

The Jet adds one feature the Grizzly lacks, the Vortex Cone. Jet says it improves chip separation, keeps the filter from clogging, and packs the collection bag more efficiently. It sits inside the single-stage body, so this is still a single-stage collector with a helper, and the full two-stage cyclone is a different design. The Jet also lists a larger bag, 5.3 cubic feet against the Grizzly's 4.5.

Size and noise

Grizzly's data sheet gives the G0548ZP as 37 inches side to side, 27 inches front to back, and 71 inches tall, at 145 pounds. For the Jet, dealer listings disagree on height and weight, so I left those out rather than guess. Check Jet's manual before you measure your corner. On noise, Grizzly's listing gives 83 to 85 dB and Jet's gives 70 to 80 dB. Neither states the distance, so I would treat both as rough ranges.

How buying works with each brand

Grizzly sells direct. The manual tells you to order online at grizzly.com or call 1-800-523-4777, and Grizzly machines also show up at some outside retailers. Grizzly's house brands include Shop Fox and South Bend, and its warranty covers all three. That's why my Shop Fox dust collector review cross shops with Grizzly so often.

Jet is part of JPW Industries, the same company behind Powermatic and Wilton, and it sells through authorized sellers. This matters for the warranty. JPW's warranty statement says coverage applies only to products bought from JPW or a JPW authorized seller in the United States, and it reserves the right to reject claims for products from unauthorized sellers, including unauthorized internet sites. Before you buy a Jet from an online marketplace, confirm the seller is authorized. JPW lists 1-800-274-6848 for that question. Powermatic follows the same warranty rules, covered in my Powermatic dust collector review.

Warranty

Grizzly: 1 year to the original purchaser from the date of purchase. Grizzly's support site says registration is not needed, but proof of purchase is. It excludes misuse, accidents, improper wiring, lack of maintenance, and consumable parts, and caps its liability at the price you paid. Grizzly offers 2, 3, and 5 year BearShield plans on some machines.

Jet: JPW's statement lists 5 years for JET woodworking machinery, dropping to 2 years if the machine is used for commercial or industrial work. Consumable items get 90 days, and some parts and accessories carry shorter terms, so read the table in the statement. The warranty covers only the first end user in the United States and does not transfer to a second owner. Registration is optional.

Support and parts

  • Grizzly parts: Grizzly runs an online parts store where you search by model number or part number. Its support site says it keeps replacement parts in stock during production and for up to five years after a machine is discontinued. The G0548ZP's replacement canister is H5783 and its plastic bag is T20543.
  • Grizzly repairs: the manual lists a tech support line at (570) 546-9663. For a warranty claim, Grizzly asks for the part numbers, serial number, manufacture date, and proof of purchase, and it issues a return number before anything ships back.
  • Jet repairs: you start with JPW's online contact form and proof of purchase. If the machine needs inspection, you may have to ship or haul it to JPW or an Authorized Service Center at your own expense, and pay for the trip back. You need a return authorization (RGA) first. Parts replaced under warranty ship free within the continental United States.

Which one I would buy

  • Buy the Grizzly G0548ZP if you have or will add a 240V circuit, want the bigger motor and 1 micron filter, and are comfortable with a 1 year warranty from a direct seller.
  • Buy the Jet DC-1100VX-CK if you need a 115V plug on day one, want the Vortex Cone and larger bag, or value a 5 year warranty from an authorized dealer.
  • Look at other 2 HP units if airflow for several machines is your main goal. My best 2 HP dust collector list has more options.
