Table Saw Dust Collection

A table saw throws dust from two places at once, and most of the setup advice out there only deals with one of them. The cabinet below the blade catches the heavy stuff if your collector can pull enough air through it. The blade itself throws fine dust up and back at you, and no cabinet port on earth catches that. You need both a below-table connection and some kind of above-table capture, or you are only getting half the job done.

I have spent enough hours standing at a table saw with dust hanging in the sun coming through my shop window to know that "the shroud looks like it's working" and "the shroud is actually working" are two different things. Here is what I have learned setting up a half dozen different saws, cabinet and contractor style, plus what the engineering sources back up and where they disagree.

How much CFM does a table saw actually need

Published guidance on this varies more than you would expect for something that seems like a solved problem. Oneida, who builds dust collection systems for a living, puts most common table saws in the 300 to 600 CFM range for the collector itself. WorkshopCalc's reference chart lands narrower, around 350 to 450 CFM. Both of those numbers assume a reasonably sealed cabinet and a decent 4 inch port.

Bill Pentz, who has been writing about fine dust capture longer than almost anyone in the hobby space, argues those numbers are built around chip pickup, not fine dust capture. His position is that many stationary tools, table saws included, need closer to 1,000 CFM if your actual goal is pulling the sub 10 micron dust out of the air before you breathe it, not just keeping the cabinet floor clean. That is a genuinely stricter target, and it is worth understanding why the gap exists rather than picking a number and moving on.

The short version: a saw cabinet that looks empty after a cut can still have thrown a cloud of fine dust that settled somewhere else in the shop, or that you inhaled before it settled. Chips disappearing and fine dust disappearing are not the same test. If your priority is keeping your lungs out of it, size toward the higher end of what your collector and duct run can actually deliver, not just the tool manufacturer's stock port size.

Whatever target you pick, remember that a collector's rated CFM and the CFM that actually shows up at your saw are two very different numbers once you account for hose length, elbows, and a cyclone or filter in the path. Setup options: below the blade

Most cabinet saws come with a 4 inch port on the back or bottom of the cabinet. That port size is a packaging decision, not necessarily the right size for your collector. If you are running a 4 inch main duct system, a stock 4 inch port is fine. If you have stepped up to a 5 or 6 inch main for the rest of your shop, reducing all the way down to 4 inches at the saw throws away a lot of the capacity you paid for upstream.

Contractor saws are the harder case. Many of them have an open back with the motor hanging out, which means there is no real cabinet to seal and pull dust through in the first place. A cabinet enclosure kit, even a simple sheet plastic or plywood box you build yourself, gives the collector something to actually pull against. Without it, you are trying to collect dust from an open room, which no amount of CFM fixes.

Setup options: above the blade (overarm and blade guard collection)

This is the part of the job most home shops skip, and it is also the part doing the most work against fine dust exposure specifically. An overarm dust collection arm, or a blade guard with a built in collection port, captures dust at the point it is thrown from the blade, before it has a chance to spread through the room.

Overarm units typically tie into their own hose run, separate from the below table port, and most setups use a Y fitting to combine both lines back to one blast gate, or run two gates if your collector has the capacity to open both at once. The tradeoff is real: an overarm arm hangs in your line of sight and can be one more thing in the way during certain cuts. Most people who use one for a while stop noticing it. Given what fine sawdust does to lungs, that tradeoff is worth making.

Common mistakes I see

  • Undersized flex hose run. A 10 foot coil of 4 inch flex from the collector to the saw can quietly cost you more airflow than a straight rigid duct run three times as long. Keep flex short and use rigid pipe for anything past a few feet.
  • No above table capture at all. If your whole setup is a below table port and nothing else, you are only fighting half the dust problem, no matter how big your collector is.
  • Ignoring the blast gate math. If you run one collector to multiple gates and leave several open at once, none of them get full airflow. Close every gate except the one for the tool you are actively running.
  • Ripping sheet goods without support for the offcut. Not a dust problem exactly, but a fine dust exposure problem: standing directly behind the blade while ripping puts your breathing zone right in the dust plume. Stand slightly to the side when you can.

FAQ

Does a table saw really need dust collection, or is a shop vac enough?

A shop vac can handle light, occasional use, but its airflow (CFM) is usually much lower than what a dedicated collector delivers, even though its suction (static pressure) is often higher. For a saw you use regularly, a proper dust collector with a 4 inch or larger port will clear more volume and keep up with a full day of cutting better than a shop vac will. Do I need both an overarm guard and a below table connection?

For chip cleanup alone, the below table port does most of the visible work. For actually reducing the fine dust you breathe, the overarm or blade guard connection matters just as much, since that is where the dust is thrown before it spreads through the room.

What size hose should I run to my table saw?

Match your saw's port, usually 4 inches on most cabinet saws, but keep the flex hose section as short as you can and step up to rigid duct for any real distance. A long run of 4 inch flex is one of the biggest airflow killers in a small shop system.

Can I add dust collection to an old contractor saw with no cabinet?

Yes, with an enclosure kit or a simple shop built plywood or sheet plastic box around the open back. Without some kind of sealed cabinet, there is nothing for the collector to pull against.
