How I Test

Here is exactly how a number on this site gets made, on my own bench, not copied from a manufacturer's spec sheet, plus where the honest limits of that testing are.

The protocol

  1. Fix the tool-side setup. The same hood, port adapter, duct route, and hose length are used for every collector in a given comparison, so the collector is the only thing that changes.
  2. Measure airflow at the tool, not at the collector's inlet. A manufacturer's rated CFM is measured with no ductwork attached at all, which is not how anyone actually runs a dust collector.
  3. Measure static pressure through the real duct run, and record it alongside the CFM figure, since the two only mean something together.
  4. Run a standardized dust load, the same material and quantity every time, and weigh what gets captured in the separator versus what reaches the filter.
  5. Measure fine dust before and after with the particle counter, at a fixed distance from the tool, to see what a collector actually keeps out of the air you breathe.
  6. Measure noise at 8 feet, the same distance every time.
  7. Track filter loading over time. A collector that performs well on day one and badly after a month of use is not a good collector, so units get re-checked, not tested once and forgotten.
  8. Publish the raw numbers, not just a rating, so you can weigh them against what matters to you.

Where this falls short of a real lab

This is one shop, one tester, and consumer-grade instruments, not an accredited laboratory. Results are repeatable within this bench and this protocol, and they are far more grounded than a spec sheet, but they are not a substitute for an industrial hygiene assessment if fine dust exposure is a serious health concern in your specific shop. Where that matters, this site says so directly rather than overstating what a home bench test can prove.
