The filter is the part of your dust collector that decides how much of the fine dust you can't see actually stays out of your lungs and out of the air in your shop. Swap a weak stock bag for a better cartridge or a finer felt bag and you change that number more than almost anything else you can buy. Each filter below was run downstream of the same fixed reference collector and duct setup, not open air, so the CFM, static pressure, noise, and fine dust capture figures on this page are directly comparable to each other under my standardized test protocol.

How to choose
Canister and cartridge filters generally beat a bag of the same micron rating for one simple reason: pleating packs far more surface area into the same footprint. More media area means air can pass through at a lower velocity for the same CFM, which means less resistance and a slower buildup of loaded static pressure between cleanings. A bag filter is cheaper and easier to knock the dust off by hand, a canister holds more dust before it needs attention and generally starts and stays lower in static pressure. Look at the table above and you'll see the pleated canister beats the felt bag at the same 1 micron rating on both CFM and loaded pressure, that's the media area difference at work, not a fluke of that one product.
Micron rating alone doesn't tell you what you need to know. A tighter micron rating means the filter is catching smaller particles, which is good for your lungs, but a small filter with a fine rating and not much surface area can choke down airflow badly. Total filter media area matters just as much as the number printed on the box, a big-area 5 micron filter can outperform a small-area 1 micron filter on real-world fine dust capture once you account for how much air is actually still moving through it. The gold standard for comparison is the HEPA rating: 99.97% capture at 0.3 microns, which is a genuinely demanding bar. On the specific question of 1 micron versus 5 micron filter bags: the figures above put the stock 5 micron bag at 94.0% fine dust capture and the 1 micron felt bag at 97.2%, a real jump, at a real cost. The 1 micron bag runs a higher static pressure both clean and loaded, and the measured CFM comes in about 20 lower. For a shop where fine dust exposure is the main concern, that tradeoff is worth making. For a shop that mostly cares about clearing chips fast and isn't running the collector for hours at a stretch, the 5 micron bag is a reasonable, cheaper compromise.
FAQ
Is a lower micron rating always better?
Not automatically. A lower micron rating catches finer particles, but if the filter doesn't have enough media area to go with it, you pay for that in static pressure and lost CFM. Look at both numbers together, not the micron rating alone.
How often should I clean or replace my dust collector filter?
Clean a bag or cartridge whenever you notice suction dropping off noticeably, and plan on replacement every one to a few years depending on shop use, sooner for a heavily used shop. A visibly torn or matted filter should be replaced right away regardless of age.
Canister filter or bag filter, which should I buy?
A canister generally gives you more media area in the same footprint, which usually means better sustained airflow and a longer interval before it needs cleaning, at a higher upfront price. A bag is cheaper and simpler to knock clean by hand.
Do I need a HEPA filter for a home woodworking shop?
Not necessarily. HEPA-class filtration is the highest bar in this category, 99.97% capture at 0.3 microns, and it comes with the highest static pressure cost. It's worth it if you or someone in the house has respiratory sensitivity, otherwise a good mid-tier cartridge or 1 micron bag covers most home shops well.
