Sander Dust Collection
Of every tool in a woodworking shop, sanders are the ones I take most seriously for dust collection, and it has nothing to do with how messy they look. Sanding does not produce big visible chips the way a saw or jointer does. It produces fine, often sub 10 micron dust, the kind that stays airborne longest and reaches deepest into your lungs. A dust particle you can see and sweep up is, almost by definition, not the one doing the most damage to your respiratory system. Particles in the 10 to 30 micron range are visible and settle out of the air relatively quickly. The finer fraction that matters most, especially anything down near 2.5 microns, is invisible and can stay suspended for a long time in a shop with poor air movement.
Random orbit and handheld sanders
Handheld random orbit sanders almost always ship with a small onboard dust bag or a port for a shop vac hose. The bag is nearly useless for fine dust, it mostly catches larger particles and lets the rest pass through the fabric weave. Connecting the sander to a shop vac with a decent filter, ideally a HEPA rated one, is a real upgrade over the stock bag, both for capture at the tool and for keeping that fine dust out of the room air in the first place.
If you do a lot of hand sanding, pairing the vacuum connection with a stationary or portable air filtration unit running nearby helps catch what escapes the tool's own dust port, which is inevitable with a handheld tool moving across a surface.
Drum sanders
A drum sander is typically enclosed in a cabinet with a dedicated dust port, similar in concept to a planer, and it benefits from the same principles: adequate CFM, a properly sized duct run, and short flex hose. WorkshopCalc's reference chart puts drum sanders in the 350 to 450 CFM range, similar to a jointer. Because a drum sander produces continuous fine dust across the width of a pass, an underpowered or poorly ducted collection setup here shows up quickly as dust escaping around the infeed and outfeed openings rather than being pulled through the cabinet.
Spindle and oscillating sanders
Spindle sanders work more like a lathe in terms of dust collection challenge: an open cutting point rather than an enclosed cabinet. Most benchtop and stationary spindle sanders have a port built into the table near the spindle, which works reasonably well since the dust source stays in a fixed location, unlike a handheld sander moving across a workpiece. Keeping that port clear and connected to adequate CFM matters more here than adding elaborate capture hardware, since the geometry is already fairly favorable.
Why this tool category deserves the health cluster's attention
OSHA's wood dust guidance identifies local exhaust ventilation, meaning collection placed as close as practical to the point dust is generated, as the primary engineering control for wood dust exposure. Sanding is the woodworking process most likely to put your face directly in that zone for extended periods, since inspecting a sanded surface for evenness or grain match naturally puts you close to the work. That combination, fine particle size plus close proximity plus extended duration, is exactly why sanders deserve more attention than their modest mess might suggest. Common mistakes
- Relying on the stock dust bag on a handheld sander. It catches visible debris and lets much of the fine fraction pass straight through.
- No air filtration running during extended sanding sessions. Point source collection helps, but a handheld sander moving across a surface will always let some dust escape into the room. A separate air filtration unit running in the background catches what the tool itself misses.
- Skipping a respirator because "the dust collection is hooked up." Collection reduces exposure; it does not eliminate it, especially for handheld sanding where the tool moves across an open surface close to your face.
