Lathe Dust Collection
Turning is a strange case for dust collection, because a lathe throws two very different kinds of debris depending on what stage of a project you are at. Roughing out a blank throws heavy chips and shavings, easy to sweep up and not much of an inhalation concern. Sanding on the lathe, which most turners do for a long stretch of every project, throws fine dust directly at your face, since you are usually leaning in close to the spinning piece to sand it.
That second part is the one worth taking seriously. A lathe has no cabinet, no enclosure, nothing between the workpiece and open air. Whatever collection setup you use has to work against that open geometry.
Where to position collection
The most common and effective setup is a collector or hood positioned behind and slightly below the lathe, angled to catch material as it flies off the piece during turning and especially during sanding. Because you are standing at the headstock or tailstock end working the tool rest, the collection point generally needs to sit behind the work, not in front of it, so it is not competing with your body position and tool access.
A flexible hose on a swing arm or adjustable stand lets you reposition the intake as you move along the length of a spindle or reposition for a bowl blank. Fixed hoods work for turners who mostly do one kind of work in one spot, but most lathes see a mix of spindle and faceplate work that benefits from a moveable capture point.
CFM and airflow
WorkshopCalc's reference chart puts lathe dust collection in the 300 to 400 CFM range, similar to a bandsaw or router table. That number comes with a caveat worth repeating: open source capture, meaning collection from an open point in the room rather than an enclosed cabinet, is unusually sensitive to hood positioning and distance from the source. A collector rated well above 400 CFM positioned three feet from the workpiece will catch less than a smaller unit positioned twelve inches away with the hood angled correctly. Distance and angle matter more here than for almost any other stationary tool.
Sanding is the real problem
Turners tend to spend far more time sanding a piece on the lathe than actually cutting it with a gouge or skew. Sanding dust is finer than chip and shaving debris, and it is generated right at the point you are leaning in to inspect your work, often within a foot or two of your face. This is exactly the kind of exposure OSHA and NIOSH guidance points to when discussing local exhaust ventilation, meaning capture placed as close as practical to where dust is actually generated. A collection hood positioned for roughing cuts is not automatically positioned well for sanding, so it is worth checking your setup specifically during the sanding stage of a project, not just assuming your roughing setup covers it.
Pairing lathe dust collection with a respirator or dust mask during sanding is common practice among turners for good reason. Collection reduces what is in the air; it does not eliminate it, especially at close range to a spinning piece.
Common mistakes
- Positioning collection too far from the work. A hood a few feet away does much less than one twelve to eighteen inches from the piece, even with the same CFM behind it.
- Forgetting to reposition for sanding. A setup dialed in for roughing cuts often needs to move closer or angle differently once you switch to sanding, since sanding dust is finer and you are working closer to the piece.

Yes, especially for smaller lathes and lighter use. A shop vac's smaller hose and higher static pressure work fine for a single point-source hood, though total airflow will be lower than a dedicated collector.
Does an air filtration unit replace the need for a collection hood at the lathe?
No. An air filtration unit cleans room air over time; it does not capture dust at the source the way a properly positioned hood does. Use both together for the best result.
