Dust Collection Pipe: PVC versus Metal
Few topics in small shop dust collection generate more forum arguments than PVC versus metal duct. Most of those threads end up tangled between two separate questions that deserve separate answers: does the pipe material affect airflow, and is PVC actually a fire or explosion risk from static buildup. Here is what the engineering sources say about each.
Does pipe material affect airflow?
Less than most people assume, as long as the interior is smooth. Airflow resistance in straight duct is driven mostly by diameter, interior smoothness, and length, not by the base material itself. Smooth wall PVC and smooth wall metal duct perform similarly in straight runs of the same diameter. Where duct choice matters more is at fittings and transitions: cheap thin wall metal duct with rough seams, or PVC fittings with poor internal steps at joints, can each introduce more turbulence than a well made version of either material.

The static electricity myth
This is the part of the debate that generates the most heat and the least agreement. The concern goes: PVC is a poor conductor, dust moving through it can build a static charge, and that charge could theoretically spark and ignite fine dust or fumes inside the duct.
Community discussion on this, including detailed threads on WOODWEB's trade forum, is split, and for good reason: this genuinely is a real physical phenomenon under specific conditions, but the practical risk in a typical home woodworking shop, at typical humidity and typical dust concentrations, is a different question than the physical possibility in general. This is exactly the kind of question our research digest flags as a code and safety question, not a pure airflow question: combustible dust risk, grounding, and fire code requirements vary substantially by scale, material, and jurisdiction, and forum consensus is not a substitute for checking your local code, especially for anything beyond a single hobby shop.
The honest answer: for a typical home shop, most professional installers and manufacturers use grounded metal duct as standard practice, particularly for any commercial or larger scale installation, while PVC remains extremely common in hobby shops without documented widespread incident. If you want to eliminate the question entirely rather than research the specific risk level for your situation, grounded metal duct removes it. If you use PVC, running a grounding wire inside or along the pipe is a common hobby-shop practice, though its actual effectiveness is itself debated. This is a case where being upfront about genuine disagreement in the sourcing is more honest than pretending there is a clean, universally agreed answer.
Cost and practicality
PVC is generally cheaper per foot and easier to source at home improvement stores, with a wide range of fittings readily available. It is also lighter and easier for one person to install alone. Metal duct, particularly snap-lock or spiral pipe, tends to cost more and often requires ordering from a dedicated HVAC or dust collection supplier rather than a local hardware store, but is standard in professional and commercial installations and handles rough handling and impact better over time.
4 inch versus 6 inch duct
This is a separate question from pipe material, and it matters more for actual airflow. Duct cross sectional area increases with the square of the radius, not linearly, so stepping from 4 inch to 6 inch duct nearly doubles the cross sectional area available for airflow at the same velocity. Oneida's duct sizing guidance uses exactly this point in its worked planer example: an 800 CFM target is achievable through 6 inch duct at a reasonable velocity in a way that would require unrealistically high velocity, and correspondingly high static pressure loss, through 4 inch duct. If your collector and system can support it, a 6 inch main generally gives you more headroom than a 4 inch main, regardless of whether you choose PVC or metal.
Which to buy
For a typical home shop main and branch lines, either material works from a pure airflow standpoint as long as diameter and fitting quality are good. If cost and DIY convenience matter most to you, PVC is the common hobby choice. If you want to remove the static discussion from your list of things to think about, or you are running a larger or shared shop space, grounded metal duct is the more conservative choice and the professional standard.
