The single stage vs two stage dust collector question comes down to one part: the separator. A two-stage collector adds a cyclone or baffle ahead of the impeller and filter, so bulk chips and heavy debris drop out of the airstream before the air ever reaches them. A single-stage collector has no separator. Everything the collector pulls in, chips and fine dust together, goes straight to the filter and, on some designs, straight past the impeller too. That one part changes how each type performs and how much upkeep it needs.
