Miter Saw Dust Collection
If you own a miter saw, you already know it is the dirtiest tool in the shop. The factory dust port and bag that ship with most miter saws catch maybe a third of what the blade throws, and that is being generous. I have run enough crosscuts to watch dust settle on every horizontal surface within ten feet of a saw that was, technically, hooked up to dust collection the whole time.
The reason is simple once you see it: a miter saw's blade is completely exposed on top, spinning in open air, with no enclosure to speak of. Every other stationary tool in a shop has some kind of cabinet or housing the collector can pull a vacuum inside of. A miter saw does not. You are trying to capture dust from an open plume, and that is a much harder problem than sealing a box and sucking the air out of it.
What CFM a miter saw actually needs
WorkshopCalc's reference numbers put miter saws around 300 to 350 CFM, on the lower end of stationary tool demand. That number is a little misleading though, because the limiting factor for a miter saw usually is not your collector's rated CFM. It is the hood geometry, meaning how close the collection point sits to where the blade actually throws dust, and how much of the open blade area that hood covers.
A powerful collector connected to the stock 2.5 or 4 inch port on most miter saws will still lose a lot of dust to the open air above and behind the blade, because the port only pulls from one small point. This is a case where a well designed capture shroud matters more than raw airflow. A modest collector paired with a good enclosure will often outperform a bigger collector paired with the stock port and nothing else.
Setup options
- Stock port plus flex hose. The baseline setup. Better than the bag that ships with most saws, but still only catches dust near the port itself, not what gets thrown up and over the blade guard during a cut.
- Aftermarket shrouds and hoods. A number of manufacturers and small shop builders sell enclosures that wrap around more of the blade area, with a single larger port feeding your collector. These meaningfully outperform the stock setup because they capture a bigger share of the plume before it escapes into the room, not because they move more air.
- DIY plywood box. A simple three sided box behind and around the saw, open only where the workpiece needs to pass through, gives your collector something closer to an enclosed volume to pull from instead of an open room. This is one of the cheapest upgrades in dust collection, and it works because it changes the geometry of the problem, not the CFM.
- Downdraft table addition. For shops doing a lot of miter saw work, some people build a downdraft surface into the saw station itself, pulling dust down and away rather than relying only on a rear port. More involved to build, but effective for high volume use.
Why this is worth fixing
A miter saw station usually sits in a corner or against a wall, often near where people walk through the shop, which means the dust it throws does not stay contained the way dust from a table saw cabinet does. It settles on nearby surfaces, gets kicked back into the air by foot traffic, and lingers. If you care about fine dust exposure specifically, the miter saw station is one of the higher value places in a shop to fix, precisely because the stock setup does so little.
Recommended gear
Start with whatever collector you are already running for the rest of your shop. This is a hood and shroud problem more than a horsepower problem, so before buying a bigger collector, look at improving the capture geometry at the saw itself. Why does my miter saw still throw dust even with a shop vac hooked up?
Because the stock port only captures a small fraction of what the blade throws, especially the dust that goes up and over the top of the guard during the cut. Adding a shroud or enclosure around more of the blade area, not just more suction, is what actually reduces the mess.
Is a shop vac or a dust collector better for a miter saw?

Do aftermarket miter saw dust hoods really make a difference?
Yes, more than most airflow upgrades, because they address the actual failure point: an open blade throwing dust in multiple directions with only one small capture point. A bigger hood covering more of that area catches dust an ordinary port never sees.
Can I build my own miter saw dust enclosure?
Yes. A simple plywood box around the back and sides of the saw, tied into your existing collector, is one of the more effective cheap upgrades available for this specific tool.
