Flex hose is the one part of a dust collection system every shop touches, the short flexible run between a machine port and the rigid duct or the collector itself. It's also where a lot of hard-won static pressure quietly disappears. The hoses below were run downstream of the same fixed reference collector and duct setup, not open air, so the CFM and static pressure figures on this page are directly comparable to each other under my standardized test protocol.

How to choose
Match the hose diameter to the port on the machine, not the other way around. Most cabinet saws, jointers, and planers run a 4 inch port, so a 4 inch dust collection hose is the default choice for most shops. If your collector and main trunk are already sized at 5 inches or larger, running a 5 inch flexible dust collection hose section down to the machine keeps velocity up and loss down, you only reduce down at the very last fitting. A 2.5 inch shop-vac hose is its own category entirely, meant for a high-static extractor pulling a small volume of air hard, not a shop dust collector pulling a large volume of air gently, don't compare the two on the same chart.
Keep flex hose short. As a rule of thumb, one foot of flex hose costs roughly as much static pressure as five feet of rigid duct, corrugated wall or ribbed interior creates far more turbulence than a smooth metal or PVC pipe of the same diameter. Use flex only where you need it to actually flex, at the machine connection and anywhere you need to move a hose out of the way, and run rigid duct for everything else. FAQ
What size is a standard dust collector hose?
4 inches is the most common size for a shop dust collector, matching the port on most stationary tools. Larger collectors and main trunk lines often step up to 5 or 6 inches, while shop-vac style extractors typically use 2.5 inch hose instead.
Does a longer hose really cost that much airflow?
Yes. Every extra foot of flex adds friction the fan has to overcome, and the loss compounds with corrugation depth. Going from a 6 foot to a 10 foot smooth 4 inch section in the figures above costs roughly 60 CFM, keep runs as short as the machine layout allows.
Smooth-wall or ribbed flex hose, does it matter?
It does. Smooth-wall interior hose moves air with less turbulence than ribbed or corrugated interior hose at the same diameter and length. Ribbed hose is usually cheaper and more flexible for tight routing, which is a fair tradeoff in a short run, less so over a long one.
